What is it used for?
Amoxycillin with clavulanic acid is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the ear, nose, throat, lungs, skin, urinary tract and teeth, when prescribed by a healthcare professional.

How does it work?
Amoxycillin kills bacteria by preventing them from building their protective cell wall. Clavulanic acid helps protect amoxycillin from enzymes made by some bacteria, allowing it to work against a wider range of infections.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably with a meal to reduce stomach upset. Swallow with water and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not take it for viral infections such as colds or flu.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, indigestion, skin rash and thrush may occur.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxycillin, other beta-lactam antibiotics or any ingredient. Inform the healthcare professional about previous antibiotic-related liver problems, kidney disease or glandular fever. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin rash. Contact a healthcare professional if severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea occurs.
