What is it used for?
Amoxycillin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the ear, nose, throat, chest, skin, urinary tract and other parts of the body. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort and skin rash.
Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a previous serious allergy to amoxycillin, penicillin or related antibiotics. Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or a severe skin rash. Contact a doctor if diarrhoea is severe, persistent or contains blood. Use only when prescribed, as unnecessary antibiotic use can lead to resistance.
