What is it used for?
Cephalexin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the skin, throat, ears, urinary tract and respiratory tract, when caused by susceptible bacteria. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. It may usually be taken with or without food; taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and indigestion. Skin rash may also occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there has been an allergy to cephalexin, penicillins or other cephalosporin antibiotics, or if there is kidney disease. Seek medical help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, a severe skin rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea, especially if it contains blood. Use only when prescribed, as unnecessary antibiotic use can lead to resistance.
