What is it used for?
Rifaximin 550 mg is mainly used to reduce the risk of repeated episodes of hepatic encephalopathy, a brain-related complication of severe liver disease. It may also be prescribed for irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea (IBS-D) in selected patients.

How does it work?
It is an antibiotic that works mainly inside the intestine. It reduces certain harmful bacteria and the toxins they produce, while very little of the medicine is absorbed into the bloodstream.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the recommended course. Swallow the tablet with water; it may generally be taken with or without food unless advised otherwise. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, headache, dizziness, stomach or abdominal pain, constipation, tiredness and swelling of the hands or feet may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about liver disease, allergies to rifaximin or other rifamycin antibiotics, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent diarrhoea, fever, blood in the stool, worsening abdominal pain, or signs of an allergic reaction. Use only under medical supervision, especially in severe liver disease.
