What is it used for?
Rifaximin is an intestinal antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections of the digestive tract, including some types of bacterial diarrhoea. It may also be prescribed in some people with liver disease to help reduce episodes of confusion caused by hepatic encephalopathy.

How does it work?
It works mainly inside the intestines by stopping susceptible bacteria from making essential proteins needed for their growth. Very little of the medicine is absorbed into the bloodstream.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Complete the prescribed course unless a healthcare professional tells otherwise. Do not use it for self-treatment of diarrhoea without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, flatulence, headache, dizziness and constipation may occur.

Precautions
Do not use it if allergic to rifaximin or other rifamycin antibiotics. Seek medical advice promptly for diarrhoea with blood, high fever, severe abdominal pain, dehydration, or diarrhoea that worsens or continues after treatment. Tell the doctor about liver disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and all other medicines being taken. Use only under medical supervision, especially for prolonged or repeated courses.
