What is it used for?
Rifaximin is an intestinal antibiotic used mainly to treat certain bacterial causes of diarrhoea, including travellers’ diarrhoea. It may also be prescribed for other bowel conditions when specifically advised by a doctor.
How does it work?
It acts mainly inside the intestine and stops susceptible bacteria from making essential proteins needed for their growth.
How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed by the doctor. Swallow the tablet with water and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not self-medicate for diarrhoea without medical advice.
Common side effects
Nausea, stomach or abdominal pain, headache, dizziness and gas may occur.
Precautions
Do not use it if allergic to rifaximin or other rifamycin antibiotics. Seek medical advice before use if there is severe liver disease. It may not be suitable for diarrhoea with fever or blood in the stool. Contact a doctor if diarrhoea worsens, persists or returns after treatment, as antibiotic-associated diarrhoea can occur.
