What is it used for?
Rifaximin is used to treat certain bacterial infections in the intestine, including some types of bacterial diarrhoea. It may also be prescribed for other bowel or liver-related conditions by a doctor.
How does it work?
It acts mainly inside the intestine and stops susceptible bacteria from making essential proteins needed for their growth.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Swallow the tablet with water and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not self-medicate or share this medicine.
Common side effects
Nausea, stomach pain or discomfort, bloating, flatulence, constipation, headache and dizziness.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about rifamycin antibiotic allergies, liver disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding. This medicine may not be suitable for diarrhoea with fever or blood in the stool, or for infections affecting the whole body. Seek medical advice if diarrhoea worsens, persists, or returns after treatment. Severe or persistent diarrhoea after using an antibiotic requires prompt medical attention.
