What is it used for?
Rifaximin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections in the intestine, including some cases of infectious or traveller’s diarrhoea. It may also be prescribed for other conditions, such as reducing episodes of hepatic encephalopathy, depending on the doctor’s assessment.

How does it work?
It acts mainly inside the intestine and stops susceptible bacteria from making essential proteins, which prevents them from growing. Very little of the medicine is absorbed into the bloodstream.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed by the doctor. Swallow the tablet with water and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not use it for diarrhoea unless a healthcare professional has advised it.

Common side effects
Nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, constipation, headache and dizziness may occur.

Precautions
Do not use it if allergic to rifaximin or other rifamycin antibiotics. Seek medical advice for diarrhoea with blood, high fever, severe abdominal pain, dehydration or symptoms that do not improve. Tell the doctor about liver disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Stop treatment and seek urgent help if severe rash, swelling or breathing difficulty occurs.
