What is it used for?
Rifaximin 200 mg is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections of the intestine, especially some cases of travellers’ diarrhoea caused by non-invasive bacteria. It should be used only when prescribed, as it is not suitable for every type of diarrhoea.

How does it work?
It acts mainly inside the intestine by stopping susceptible bacteria from making essential proteins needed for their growth.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow the tablet with water. It may be taken with or without food. Complete the prescribed course unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise. Do not self-medicate for diarrhoea.

Common side effects
Nausea, stomach pain or discomfort, bloating, gas, headache and dizziness.

Precautions
Do not use it if there is an allergy to rifaximin or other rifamycin antibiotics. Seek medical advice if diarrhoea is accompanied by fever or blood, becomes severe, or does not improve. Tell the doctor about liver disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and about all other medicines being taken. Stop the medicine and seek urgent help for signs of a serious allergic reaction or severe, persistent diarrhoea.
