What is it used for?
Rifaximin 550 mg is mainly used to reduce the recurrence of episodes of overt hepatic encephalopathy, a brain-related complication of serious liver disease. It may also be prescribed for irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea (IBS-D) in some adults.

How does it work?
It is an antibiotic that acts mainly inside the intestine and reduces the growth of certain gut bacteria. This can help lower the production of substances that contribute to hepatic encephalopathy and may reduce diarrhoea-related symptoms in IBS-D.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow the tablet whole with water. It may generally be taken with or without food, but follow the instructions provided by the prescriber. Do not start, stop or repeat treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness and tiredness may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about an allergy to rifaximin or other rifamycin antibiotics, severe liver disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent diarrhoea, fever or blood in the stool, as antibiotic-associated bowel inflammation can occur. Use only under medical supervision, especially when treating hepatic encephalopathy or when liver function is significantly reduced.
