What is it used for?
Rifaximin is a minimally absorbed antibiotic used mainly for certain bacterial intestinal infections that cause diarrhoea, including some cases of travellers’ diarrhoea. It may also be prescribed for irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea or to help prevent repeated episodes of hepatic encephalopathy, depending on the doctor’s assessment.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making essential proteins needed for their growth. Very little of the medicine is absorbed into the bloodstream, so it mainly acts inside the intestine.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow the tablet with water. It may be taken with or without food unless advised otherwise. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, stomach or abdominal pain, bloating, headache, dizziness and tiredness.

Precautions
Do not use it if there is a known allergy to rifaximin or other rifamycin antibiotics. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent diarrhoea, fever, blood or mucus in the stool, or diarrhoea that develops during or after treatment. Tell the doctor about liver disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and all other medicines being used. Stop and seek urgent help for severe rash, swelling or breathing difficulty.
