What is it used for?
Rifaximin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections in the intestines, including some cases of infectious diarrhoea or traveller’s diarrhoea. It should be used only when prescribed for the diagnosed condition.

How does it work?
It acts mainly inside the intestine and stops susceptible bacteria from making essential proteins needed for their growth. Very little of the medicine is absorbed into the bloodstream.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the recommended course. It may generally be taken with or without food, but follow the instructions provided by the doctor or pharmacist. Do not self-medicate for diarrhoea without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, flatulence, headache and dizziness may occur.

Precautions
Do not use it if allergic to rifaximin or other rifamycin antibiotics. Seek medical advice promptly if diarrhoea is accompanied by high fever, blood in the stool, severe abdominal pain, dehydration, or does not improve. Tell the doctor about liver disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Stop and seek help if signs of a serious allergic reaction occur.
