What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone is an injectable antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, blood, bones and joints, and certain sexually transmitted infections. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from building their protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Ceftriaxone 1 g is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection. Use it only as prescribed and complete the recommended course.
Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; rash; and changes in liver blood tests.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to ceftriaxone, penicillins or other antibiotics. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. It should be used carefully in newborn babies and in people with liver or kidney problems. Do not self-administer this medicine.
