What is it used for?
Cefotaxime with sulbactam is an injectable antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin and soft tissues, or blood, when sensitive bacteria are involved. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Cefotaxime kills bacteria by stopping them from building their protective cell wall. Sulbactam helps cefotaxime work against bacteria that can resist some antibiotics.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. Use it only as prescribed and complete the recommended course unless advised otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, skin rash or itching, and changes in liver test results may occur.

Precautions
Do not use it without medical advice if there has been a serious allergy to cefotaxime, other cephalosporins, penicillins or related antibiotics. Inform the doctor about kidney disease, liver disease, previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea, or pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
