What is it used for?
Piperacillin and tazobactam is an injectable antibiotic used in hospitals to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, and other body areas when caused by susceptible bacteria.

How does it work?
Piperacillin kills bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall. Tazobactam helps protect piperacillin from enzymes that can make some bacteria resistant to it.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection or intravenous infusion by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, kidney function, and other medical factors. Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, skin rash, and pain or irritation at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to penicillin, cephalosporin or other antibiotics, kidney disease, bleeding problems, or previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, persistent or bloody diarrhoea, or unusual bleeding. Use only under medical supervision.
