What is it used for?
Piperacillin and tazobactam injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin and soft tissues, and bloodstream. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Piperacillin kills bacteria by interfering with the formation of their protective cell wall. Tazobactam helps protect piperacillin from enzymes made by some bacteria, allowing it to work against a wider range of bacteria.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. It should be used exactly as prescribed, and the treatment course should not be stopped early unless advised by a healthcare professional.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, skin rash, and pain or redness at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Inform the doctor before use if there is an allergy to penicillins, cephalosporins or other antibiotics, kidney disease, or a history of antibiotic-related severe diarrhoea. Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, severe rash, or persistent or bloody diarrhoea. Kidney function and blood tests may be checked during prolonged treatment.
