What is it used for?
Piperacillin with tazobactam is an antibiotic injection used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Piperacillin kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from building their protective cell wall. Tazobactam helps protect piperacillin from enzymes that can make some bacteria resistant to it.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. Complete the prescribed course unless the treating doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, rash and pain or irritation at the injection site. Serious allergic reactions and severe or persistent diarrhoea need urgent medical attention.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about any allergy to penicillin, cephalosporin or other antibiotics, kidney disease, bleeding problems, or a history of severe antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Medical monitoring may be needed during treatment, especially in people with kidney problems. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or persistent watery or bloody diarrhoea.
