What is it used for?
Povidone iodine ointment is a topical antiseptic used to help prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes and minor burns.
How does it work?
It slowly releases iodine, which kills or reduces many microorganisms on the skin and helps prevent infection.
How to take/use it
For external use only. Clean and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer as directed by a doctor or pharmacist. Avoid contact with the eyes and do not swallow it. Do not use on deep wounds, serious burns or large areas unless advised by a healthcare professional.
Common side effects
Mild skin irritation, redness, itching or dryness may occur. Stop using it and seek medical advice if a severe rash, swelling or breathing difficulty develops.
Precautions
Do not use if allergic to povidone iodine or iodine. Ask a doctor before use on large or deep wounds, for prolonged treatment, or if there is thyroid disease. Use during pregnancy, breastfeeding or in young children only on medical advice. Seek medical care if the wound is deep, heavily contaminated, worsening or not healing.
