What is it used for?
Phytomenadione (vitamin K1) injection is used to prevent or treat bleeding caused by vitamin K deficiency and certain problems with blood clotting. It may also be used to help reverse the effect of some anticoagulant medicines, when prescribed by a doctor.

How does it work?
Vitamin K1 helps the liver produce proteins needed for normal blood clotting.

How to take/use it
This is an injection and must be given by a healthcare professional by the prescribed route. Do not self-inject or use it without medical advice.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; flushing or changes in taste may occur. Serious allergic reactions are rare but can occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to vitamin K or previous reaction to an injection. Inform the doctor if taking anticoagulants such as warfarin, as blood-clotting tests and medicine doses may need monitoring. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash or dizziness after the injection.
