What is it used for?
Ranitidine reduces excess stomach acid and is used for acidity, heartburn and acid reflux. It may also be prescribed for stomach or duodenal ulcers.
How does it work?
It blocks histamine H2 receptors in the stomach, reducing the production of stomach acid.
How to take/use it
Take only as directed by a doctor or pharmacist. Swallow the tablet with water and do not change the dose or treatment duration without medical advice. Ranitidine products have been withdrawn or restricted in many countries because of contamination concerns; do not use old stock and check with a pharmacist that the product is approved and current.
Common side effects
Headache, nausea, stomach discomfort, constipation or diarrhoea, and dizziness.
Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is kidney or liver disease, a history of porphyria, or an allergy to ranitidine. Seek medical advice for persistent symptoms, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, vomiting blood or black stools. Check with a doctor or pharmacist before combining it with other medicines.
