What is it used for?
Ranitidine reduces excess stomach acid and is used for acidity, heartburn, acid reflux (GERD), and stomach or duodenal ulcers.
How does it work?
It blocks histamine H2 receptors in the stomach, reducing the amount of acid produced.
How to take/use it
Take only as directed by a doctor or pharmacist and follow the product label. Swallow with water and do not exceed the recommended amount. Ranitidine products have been withdrawn or restricted in many countries; use it only if it has been specifically prescribed and is legally approved for use.
Common side effects
Headache, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, or stomach discomfort.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney or liver disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or other medicines being taken. Seek medical advice for difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, severe or persistent stomach pain, or heartburn that does not improve. Do not self-treat persistent symptoms, as serious conditions can have similar symptoms.
