What is it used for?
Ranitidine reduces excess stomach acid. It is used for acidity and heartburn, acid reflux (GERD), and stomach or duodenal ulcers when prescribed by a doctor.
How does it work?
It blocks histamine H2 receptors in the stomach, reducing the amount of acid produced.
How to take/use it
Take it only as directed by a doctor or pharmacist. Swallow the tablet with water and do not take more or use it for longer than advised. Ranitidine has been withdrawn or restricted in some countries because of safety concerns; use only a product approved and prescribed in the relevant country.
Common side effects
Headache, nausea, stomach discomfort, constipation, or diarrhoea.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney or liver disease, porphyria, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Seek medical advice for unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, persistent vomiting, or ongoing symptoms. Tell the doctor about all other medicines, as ranitidine can interact with some treatments. Do not self-treat persistent acidity, as it may mask a more serious condition.
