What is it used for?
Pantoprazole is used to reduce excess stomach acid and treat acidity, heartburn and acid reflux (GERD). It is also used for some acid-related stomach or duodenal ulcers, as prescribed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It is a proton pump inhibitor that blocks the final step of stomach-acid production, reducing the amount of acid released into the stomach.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush or chew it. It is generally taken before food; follow the instructions on the prescription or pack.

Common side effects
Headache, diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and gas may occur. Contact a doctor if side effects are severe or persistent.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is liver disease, an allergy to pantoprazole or other acid-reducing medicines, or if it is being used for a long period. Long-term use may require medical monitoring. Seek medical advice for difficulty swallowing, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, black stools or unexplained weight loss, as these may need urgent assessment. Tell the doctor about all other medicines being taken.
