What is it used for?
Orlistat is used with a reduced-calorie diet and physical activity to help manage obesity and overweight in suitable adults. It helps reduce the amount of dietary fat absorbed by the body.

How does it work?
Orlistat blocks enzymes in the intestine that digest fat. This prevents some of the fat from being absorbed and removes it from the body in the stool.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, usually with a main meal that contains fat. Follow the product label or doctor’s instructions, and do not take more than recommended. A balanced, reduced-calorie diet is important during treatment.

Common side effects
Oily or fatty stools, loose stools, increased bowel movements, urgent need to pass stool, gas with discharge, abdominal discomfort and accidental leakage of stool. These effects may be worse after high-fat meals.

Precautions
Do not use during pregnancy unless specifically advised by a doctor. Tell the doctor if there is chronic malabsorption, cholestasis, gallbladder disease, kidney disease or diabetes. Orlistat can reduce absorption of vitamins and may interact with medicines such as ciclosporin, warfarin, levothyroxine and some medicines for seizures or HIV. Discuss all medicines and supplements with a doctor or pharmacist.
