What is it used for?
Orlistat is used with a reduced-calorie diet and physical activity to help manage obesity and support weight loss in suitable adults.

How does it work?
It blocks enzymes that digest dietary fat in the intestine. This reduces the amount of fat absorbed by the body, so some undigested fat leaves the body in the stools.

How to take/use it
Take only as prescribed, usually with meals as directed. Follow a reduced-calorie, lower-fat diet to reduce stomach and bowel-related side effects. Do not take more than prescribed. A doctor may recommend a multivitamin because orlistat can reduce absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K.

Common side effects
Oily or fatty stools, increased bowel movements, sudden urge to pass stools, loose stools, gas with discharge, and stomach discomfort or cramps.

Precautions
Do not use during pregnancy unless specifically advised by a doctor. Tell the doctor if there is chronic malabsorption, reduced bile flow, liver or kidney disease, or if taking medicines such as warfarin, ciclosporin, thyroid medicines or medicines for seizures. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or allergic symptoms.
