What is it used for?
Cephalexin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the skin, throat, lungs, ears and urinary tract. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food; taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and mild skin rash.
Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to cephalexin, penicillin or other cephalosporin antibiotics unless specifically advised by a doctor. Tell the doctor about kidney disease or a previous history of severe antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
