What is it used for?
Cephalexin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the skin, throat, ears, urinary tract and respiratory tract. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming a protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food; taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset. Do not share leftover antibiotics.
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and skin rash may occur.
Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to cephalexin or other cephalosporin antibiotics. Tell the doctor about any allergy to penicillin or other antibiotics, kidney problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
