What is it used for?
Cephalexin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the skin, throat, ears, urinary tract and respiratory tract. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming a protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food; taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and skin rash may occur.
Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is an allergy to cephalexin, penicillins or other cephalosporin antibiotics, or if there is kidney disease. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe rash. Contact a doctor if severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea develops during or after treatment. Use only when prescribed, as unnecessary antibiotic use can lead to resistance.
