What is it used for?
Cephalexin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the skin, throat, ears, urinary tract and respiratory tract. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food; taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.
Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain and vomiting may occur. Mild skin rash can also occur.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about any previous allergy to cephalexin, penicillins or other antibiotics. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Dose adjustment or medical monitoring may be needed in kidney disease. Use only when prescribed, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
