What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ears, throat, chest, urinary tract and skin. It does not work against viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from building their protective cell wall, which kills the bacteria and helps clear the infection.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed by a doctor. Reconstitute the dry syrup exactly as directed on the label or by the pharmacist. Shake well before each use and measure with an accurate measuring device. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not use leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and vomiting may occur. Mild rash can also occur.

Precautions
Do not use if there has been a serious allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporins or related penicillin antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney problems or previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a severe skin rash. Use only under medical supervision in children, and keep the medicine out of reach of children.
