What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the throat, ears, airways, urinary tract and other areas, when prescribed by a doctor. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the treatment, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover medicine.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and headache. Mild skin rash may also occur.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about any previous allergy to cefixime, cephalosporins, penicillins or other antibiotics. Seek medical help for difficulty breathing, swelling, a severe rash or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Inform the doctor if there is kidney disease or a history of antibiotic-related diarrhoea.
