What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ear, throat, lungs, urinary tract and skin. It does not work for viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from forming their protective cell wall, which kills the bacteria or prevents them from growing.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. A dispersible tablet should be dissolved in the recommended amount of water before use if stated on the pack or by the healthcare professional. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and headache. Mild skin rash may also occur.

Precautions
Tell the healthcare professional about any allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporin antibiotics or penicillin, and about kidney disease. Seek medical help for a severe or persistent rash, breathing difficulty, or severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea. Use antibiotics only when prescribed to help prevent antibiotic resistance.
