What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the throat, ears, airways and urinary tract. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed by the doctor. If supplied as a dry syrup, add water up to the marked level as directed, shake well before each use, and measure each dose with a suitable measuring device. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and vomiting. Skin rash may occur.
Precautions
Do not use if there has been a serious allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporins or certain penicillin antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney problems or previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin rash.
