What is it used for?
Cefotaxime injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, blood, bones and joints, and brain coverings. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by a doctor or nurse by injection into a vein or muscle. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the infection and kidney function. Complete the prescribed course unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, skin rash or itching may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any previous allergy to cefotaxime, other cephalosporin antibiotics or penicillin-type antibiotics. Inform the doctor about kidney problems, liver problems or a history of colitis. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe skin rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea, especially if it contains blood.
