What is it used for?
Cefotaxime injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, blood, bones or joints, and meningitis. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It is a cephalosporin antibiotic that kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by a doctor or nurse into a vein or muscle. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the infection and kidney function. Complete the prescribed course unless the treating doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; vomiting; rash; or fever. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin rash.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to cefotaxime, other cephalosporins, penicillins or other antibiotics. Inform the doctor about kidney disease, liver disease or a history of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. Use only under medical supervision, and do not use it for viral infections.
