What is it used for?
Cefotaxime injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, blood, bones and joints, and infections around the brain. It is used only when prescribed by a healthcare professional.

How does it work?
It kills bacteria by preventing them from forming the protective cell wall they need to survive. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by a doctor or nurse into a vein or muscle. The dose and length of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection and kidney function. Complete the prescribed course unless the healthcare professional advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, rash and headache may occur.

Precautions
Inform the healthcare professional about any allergy to cefotaxime, other cephalosporins, penicillins or other antibiotics, and about kidney problems. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe skin reactions, or severe or persistent diarrhoea, including diarrhoea with blood. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
