What is it used for?
Ranitidine is used to reduce excess stomach acid and relieve acidity, heartburn and acid reflux. It may also be prescribed for stomach or duodenal ulcers.
How does it work?
It blocks histamine H2 receptors in the stomach, reducing the amount of acid produced.
How to take/use it
Take only as directed by a doctor or according to the product label. Swallow with water. Do not use it for prolonged or recurring symptoms without medical advice.
Common side effects
Headache, nausea, stomach pain, constipation or diarrhoea.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney or liver disease and all other medicines being taken. Seek medical advice for difficulty swallowing, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, black stools or vomiting blood. In some countries, ranitidine products have been withdrawn or restricted because of contamination concerns; use it only when a healthcare professional confirms that it is appropriate.
