What is it used for?
Ranitidine reduces excess stomach acid. It is used for acidity and heartburn, acid reflux, and stomach or duodenal ulcers.
How does it work?
It blocks histamine-2 receptors in the stomach, reducing the amount of acid produced.
How to take/use it
Take only as directed by a doctor or pharmacist, and follow the instructions on the product label. Do not take more or use it for longer than recommended. Ranitidine products have been withdrawn or restricted in many countries because of impurity concerns; use it only if specifically approved and supplied by a healthcare professional.
Common side effects
Headache, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, or dizziness.
Precautions
Inform the doctor if there is kidney or liver disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or use of other medicines. Seek medical advice for persistent or worsening symptoms, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, vomiting blood, or black stools.
