What is it used for?
Olanzapine is an antipsychotic medicine used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, including episodes of unusually high mood, energy or activity. It may also be used with other medicines for certain mood disorders when prescribed by a specialist.

How does it work?
It helps balance dopamine and serotonin, chemical messengers in the brain involved in mood, thinking and behaviour.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day if possible. Do not change the dose or stop treatment suddenly without medical advice. Avoid driving or operating machinery until its effects are known.

Common side effects
Sleepiness, increased appetite, weight gain, dizziness, dry mouth and constipation may occur. Blood sugar and cholesterol levels may also increase.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about diabetes, high cholesterol, liver disease, seizures, heart problems or glaucoma. Avoid alcohol because it can increase drowsiness. Regular monitoring of weight, blood sugar and cholesterol may be needed. Seek medical help for severe muscle stiffness, high fever, confusion, uncontrolled movements or extreme drowsiness. It is not generally recommended for treating behavioural problems in older adults with dementia unless specifically advised by a specialist.
