What is it used for?
Olanzapine is an antipsychotic medicine used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, including manic episodes. It may also help prevent the return of mood episodes in bipolar disorder when prescribed for this purpose.

How does it work?
It helps balance certain chemical messengers in the brain, including dopamine and serotonin. This can reduce hallucinations, delusions, severe mood changes and agitation.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and at the same time each day. It can usually be taken with or without food. Do not stop it suddenly without medical advice, even if symptoms improve. Avoid driving or operating machinery until its effect is known.

Common side effects
Sleepiness, dizziness, increased appetite, weight gain, dry mouth, constipation, tiredness and swelling of the hands or feet. It may also increase blood sugar and blood cholesterol levels.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about diabetes, high cholesterol, seizures, liver disease, heart problems or a history of stroke. Avoid alcohol because it can increase drowsiness and dizziness. Blood sugar, weight and cholesterol may need monitoring. Seek urgent medical help for severe muscle stiffness with fever, uncontrolled movements, fainting, or symptoms of very high blood sugar. In older adults with dementia-related psychosis, this medicine may increase the risk of stroke and death and is not usually recommended.
