What is it used for?
Amikacin injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including certain infections of the lungs, blood, abdomen, urinary tract, bones and joints. It is usually used in hospitals or under close medical supervision.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the production of proteins they need to grow and survive. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type of infection, body weight and kidney function. Do not self-inject or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Pain at the injection site, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and headache may occur. Important serious effects include reduced urine output, hearing loss, ringing in the ears, dizziness or loss of balance.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney problems, hearing or balance problems, dehydration, or muscle-weakness disorders. Kidney function and, when needed, hearing may be monitored during treatment. Inform the doctor about all medicines being used, especially other medicines that can affect the kidneys or hearing. Seek urgent medical help for hearing changes, severe dizziness, unusual weakness, swelling, or reduced urination.
