What is it used for?
Amikacin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including certain infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, blood, bones and joints. It is generally used when other antibiotics may not work.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the production of proteins they need to survive and multiply.
How to take/use it
Amikacin 250 mg is usually given as an injection into a vein or muscle by a healthcare professional. The dose and treatment duration depend on the infection, kidney function and body weight. Do not self-inject or stop treatment early unless advised by a doctor.
Common side effects
Pain at the injection site, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea may occur. Amikacin can also cause kidney problems, hearing loss, ringing in the ears or dizziness, which may be serious.
Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is kidney disease, hearing or balance problems, dehydration, or pregnancy. Kidney function and, when needed, hearing should be monitored during treatment. Seek medical help for reduced urination, swelling, unusual weakness, ringing in the ears, hearing changes, severe dizziness or difficulty breathing. Inform the doctor about other medicines, especially those that may affect the kidneys or hearing.
