What is it used for?
Amikacin injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, blood, bones or joints, and skin. It is usually used when other antibiotics may not be suitable and is given under medical supervision.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making essential proteins, which kills the bacteria or prevents them from multiplying.

How to take/use it
Amikacin is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, body weight and kidney function. Do not self-inject or skip doses, and follow the healthcare professional’s instructions.

Common side effects
Pain or redness at the injection site, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea may occur. This medicine can also cause kidney problems or hearing and balance problems, which require prompt medical attention.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, hearing or balance problems, dehydration, pregnancy, or muscle and nerve disorders. Kidney function and, when needed, hearing should be monitored during treatment. Seek medical help for reduced urination, swelling, ringing in the ears, hearing loss, dizziness, severe weakness or breathing difficulty. Inform the doctor about other medicines, especially those that may affect the kidneys or hearing.
