What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ear, throat, urinary tract and respiratory system. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
Cefixime kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food. Do not share leftover antibiotics or stop treatment without medical advice.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and headache. Skin rash may also occur.
Precautions
Do not take cefixime if there has been a serious allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporin antibiotics or certain penicillin antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney problems or previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a serious skin rash.
