What is it used for?
Amoxycillin with clavulanate is an antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxycillin kills bacteria by stopping them from forming their protective cell wall. Clavulanate helps protect amoxycillin from enzymes that can make some bacteria resistant to it.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed by a doctor and complete the recommended course. The dose and method of administration depend on the infection and the prescribed formulation. A 1200 mg strength is generally used under medical supervision; it should not be self-administered.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not use if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxycillin, clavulanate or related antibiotics. Inform the doctor about kidney or liver problems, previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea, or a history of jaundice or liver problems after taking this medicine. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
