What is it used for?
Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ear, sinuses, throat, lungs, skin, urinary tract and teeth, when prescribed by a doctor. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxicillin kills susceptible bacteria. Clavulanic acid helps protect amoxicillin from enzymes made by some bacteria, allowing it to work against a wider range of infections.

How to take/use it
Take or give it exactly as prescribed. If it is a liquid suspension, shake the bottle well before each use and measure it with an oral syringe or measuring device. Taking it with a meal may help reduce stomach upset. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve, unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort and skin rash may occur. Thrush can also develop.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin, clavulanic acid or related cephalosporin antibiotics. Inform the doctor about previous antibiotic-related jaundice or liver problems, kidney disease, liver disease, glandular fever, or any history of severe allergy. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling, a severe rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use only when prescribed, as unnecessary antibiotic use can cause resistance.
