What is it used for?
Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid is a prescription antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ear, sinuses, throat, chest, skin, urinary tract and teeth. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxicillin kills susceptible bacteria. Clavulanic acid helps protect amoxicillin from enzymes made by some bacteria, allowing it to work against a wider range of infections.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Do not use leftover antibiotics or stop treatment early, even if symptoms improve. Taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort and skin rash may occur. Mild thrush can also occur.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin, other beta-lactam antibiotics or clavulanic acid. Tell the doctor about liver disease, kidney disease, previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea, or a history of jaundice or liver problems with antibiotics. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe skin rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
