What is it used for?
Amikacin 500 mg is an injectable antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, especially infections caused by certain bacteria that may not respond to other antibiotics. It may be used for severe infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, blood, bones or joints, and skin, only when prescribed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from making essential proteins needed for their growth and survival.

How to take/use it
Amikacin is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the infection, body weight and kidney function. Complete the prescribed course and do not self-administer it.

Common side effects
Pain at the injection site, nausea or vomiting may occur. Serious effects can include reduced urine, ringing in the ears, dizziness, balance problems or hearing loss.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, hearing or balance problems, dehydration, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Kidney function and sometimes hearing should be monitored during treatment. Inform the doctor about all medicines being taken, especially other medicines that may affect the kidneys or hearing. Seek medical attention promptly for reduced urination, severe dizziness, ringing in the ears or any hearing change.
