What is it used for?
Metoprolol tartrate is used to treat high blood pressure and certain heart conditions, such as angina (heart-related chest pain), fast or irregular heartbeat, and after a heart attack. It may also be prescribed for other heart-related conditions by a doctor.

How does it work?
It is a beta-blocker that slows the heartbeat and reduces the force with which the heart pumps. This lowers blood pressure and reduces the heart’s workload.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably with or immediately after food, and at the same time each day. Swallow with water. Do not stop it suddenly without medical advice, as this may worsen heart problems.

Common side effects
Tiredness, dizziness, slow heartbeat, headache, cold hands or feet, nausea, and stomach upset.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision if there is asthma or other breathing disease, a very slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, heart failure, circulation problems, or diabetes. It may hide some warning signs of low blood sugar. Avoid driving if dizzy, and seek medical advice for fainting, severe breathing difficulty, or an unusually slow heartbeat.
