What is it used for?
Methylergometrine is used after childbirth or pregnancy-related procedures to help the uterus contract and control or prevent heavy bleeding caused by poor uterine contraction. It is used only under medical supervision.
How does it work?
It causes the muscles of the uterus to contract firmly, helping reduce bleeding. It can also narrow blood vessels, which may raise blood pressure.
How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed by a doctor or other healthcare professional. Follow the prescribed route, dose and schedule; do not self-medicate or use it during pregnancy before delivery.
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, abdominal or uterine cramps, and increased blood pressure.
Precautions
Do not use without medical advice if there is high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia or eclampsia, heart disease, blood-vessel disease, or severe liver or kidney problems. Seek urgent medical help for severe headache, chest pain, breathing difficulty, seizures, or very high blood pressure. Tell the doctor about all medicines being used, especially other ergot medicines or medicines that can raise blood pressure.
